Top things for students to do in Newcastle

Newcastle upon Tyne is vibrant place to study and is often voted as one of the UK’s top student cities. Just recently, Newcastle was awarded #1 city in the world by The Rough Guide!

One of the best things about studying in Newcastle is the huge amount culture, entertainment and shopping options available right on your doorstep. So whether you’re looking for something fun to do with friends on a weekend or a spot of entertainment after college hours – there’s bound to be something to suit you. Here’s a short list of our favourite things to do in the city!

1. Shopping
It goes without saying that Newcastle has some of the best shopping in the North East and with over 150+ stores in Eldon Square alone, you can easily plan a full day of retail fun on our high street.

2. Tyneside Cinema
If you’re a big film buff, get yourself along to Tyneside Cinema. Showing ‘the best films in beautiful and stylish surroundings’ this is a great place to relax after a busy day shopping with friends. What’s more, every Sunday you can catch a free classic movie with the Sunday Brunch Club in the Bar Café!

3. Quayside Market
The Quayside Market is perfect if you want to find cool and unusual items and great offers.
Every Sunday you can pop along and explore stalls to discover speciality items like food, jewellery, ceramics and photography whilst enjoying entertainment from street artists and buskers.

4. Catch a show at The Performance Academy
Here at Newcastle College, we’re big on student entertainment and regularly host shows, gigs and events on campus within our Performance Academy. You can catch one of our student productions like 9 to 5 and Later… or get tickets for Q & A’s with big names visiting campus like Boy Jumps Ship, John Waugh of the 1975 or Adam Marko.

5. Take A Selfie at The BALTIC
Whilst you’re at the quayside head over to the world famous BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art. As well as exploring their awe-inspiring exhibition spaces, you can also travel up to the top floor to take a selfie with jaw-dropping panoramic views of our great city.

6. Cycle along the Tyne
Take a tour of the River Tyne and Ouseburn and sign up for a fun bicycle tour with Cycle Hub. You can book a 2 hour, half day or full day tour. There’s a great little café on site so you can grab a coffee and cake afterwards.

7. Take a day trip to The Ouseburn
If you have an adventurous spirit, why not take a trip to Ouseburn, which is just outside the city centre. You can explore hip galleries and museums, grab a bite to eat or visit Stepney Bank Stables or Ouseburn Farm.

8. Newcastle Eagles
Catch a glimpse of some top-flight basketball here in Newcastle and head over to Sport Central to see Newcastle Eagles, the UK’s number 1 basketball team.

9. Get your skates on
If you love to skate, check out the skate park at Exhibition Park. The concrete park offers both a smooth transitions and street section for you to perfect your skills.

10. Bowling at Lane 7
If you’re looking for a fun-filled day of activities, why not head to Lane 7. If you’re under 18 you can book ten pin bowling, ping pong, mini golf or karaoke until 7pm.

11. Catch a gig
If you love music, check out upcoming gigs with Metro Radio Arena or Gigs North East. This summer Newcastle College supported events like Live at Times Square and The Big Event.

12. Friday Night Skate at The Life Centre
Every winter, the Centre for Life hosts Friday Night Skate on their outdoor ice rink. With local up-and-coming DJs from Newcastle College providing the tunes, you can enjoy skating with friends to a whole host of hits.
